BASIC SECURITY FOR WIRELESS ROUTERS



Before starting you may need setup information for your specific type of internet connection, the installation technician should have left this information with you after installing your broadband connection. You should also have read the manual that came with the router before attempting, passwords and settings may differ.


1. Connecting to your Router for Configuration

(if you have network card installed)


  1. Plug the power cord into your power strip

  2. Take a network cable (ethernet) and plug it into the Network card

  3. Plug the other end into the Wireless Router (Not in Internet hole)

2. Configuring your Router

( Have router manual with you)


  1. Open your default Web browser (Internet Explorer) (E)

  2. In the Address bar type in your Routers IP address (default 192.168.1.1) and hit enter

  3. Open a Password box enter the default login and password written in the router manual (for linksys routers enter in password: admin)

This will bring you into the setup menu

3. Changing the Router Password


  1. Click Administration

  2. Enter new password in the two boxes

  3. This is the new password at the login screen

  4. Remember this Password

  1. Get the MAC Address of the computers on your network


  1. Click the start button on the toolbar

  2. Click on run

  3. In the open box type “COMMAND” and hit [Enter]

(this will open up a DOS prompt)

  1. Type in “ipconfig /all(this will show your IP configuration and LAN connections)

  2. Indented under Ethernet local area connection there is physical address.

  3. The physical address is your MAC Address


  1. CONTROLLING & LIMITING ACCESS


Under Internet access policy there is Enable and Disable


  1. Select Enable


  1. Enter a policy name


  1. Click Allow


  1. Click Edit list of PC's


  1. Enter only the MAC Addresses of the PC's you would like to allow access to your network


  1. Then click SAVE settings


  1. Then click SAVE SETTINGS at the bottom of the page

  2. Click CONTINUE

  3. Close the browser (Internet explore) and connect the wire from the broadband connection to the port labeled Internet
